Buying a Tandem Double Buggy
A tandem double buggy can be a great option for twins or children who are close in age. They are narrower than side by side buggies and are great for tight spaces like doors, public transport and terrain that is rocky.
Many also convert into travel systems that use two carrycots or car seats. They can be heavier, longer and less stable than a single pushchair.
Convertible
If you're looking for a convertible single-to-
double stroller or want to add an additional seat to an existing one, there's many options to choose from. The Vista V2 from UPPAbaby is spacious, gorgeous stroller that can easily be converted from a single model to a double by adding the rumble seat (available separately). However, it's expensive and less maneuverable than other dual strollers due to the fact that the second seat is located to the left of the front seat. Nuna Demi Grow provides a similar choice, but it lacks storage underneath the seat when it is used as a double stroller.
Other options include twin buggies with all-terrain wheels and joggers with fixed wheels that can be used to carry two children. These are more expensive, but they are designed to last longer on rough terrain, and come with higher resale prices.
Independent seat recline
If you want a double stroller which can accommodate children of different ages, you will need one with a recliner that is independent for both seats. This allows your older child to relax while the baby is in the bassinet and reverse.
It is also important to think about the size of the pushchair as it will impact the ease of traverse doors and public transport. If you have extremely narrow doors, it may be worthwhile to consider a side-by-side pushchair, such as the Mountain Buggy Duet which has the advantage of having a footprint that is similar to a single buggy, however, it is able to accommodate two seats and car seat adaptors.
Tandem buggies are generally a little longer than side-by-side models and therefore aren't difficult to maneuver through kerbs and up and down, however, they can accommodate a wider range of car/car/seat combinations, and are a great option for twins or siblings of different age. These buggies are also more expensive than single-to-double buggies, but they're worth it if you intend on keeping it for many years. They also hold a good amount of value when sold once your children are old enough to use it.
This feature will allow you to put your child in a comfortable position for naps or to observe. This is especially important if you have a child younger than in the rear seat, who will want to lie back and take a snooze while the more mature child wants to
sit and stand double stroller and observe their surroundings.
Certain brands have a unique design that allows the back of their vehicles to recline into a position that is almost flat, ideal for newborns. The iCandy Orange, for example is a stadium-style seat that can be reclined into several positions. It also comes with UPF 50+ canopy and windows that peek out.
Larger than
twin strollers for newborns buggies
There's no need to have twins to benefit from a wider double buggy - they're ideal for siblings of various age groups. They allow you to go about your day without worrying about your children touching each other. They're typically a bit larger too, with one seat sitting behind the other and usually with a fully-flat recline option for infants (or an upright position for toddlers).
A popular option is the Mountain Buggy Duet, which features the slimmest side-by-side design available and has a footprint similar to a single buggy. It also has an adjustable handle, making it easy for parents of different heights to push as well as an adjustable handbrake, which is useful when tackling difficult hills. It can be used from birth and is compatible with a variety of car seats and carrycots, meaning it's a great travel system.
Another option is the iCandy Wave, which has the convenience of a single click to fold and can be used in mono or duo mode. The clever frame can be expanded to accommodate a second chair and can be used with up to two car seats or carrycots. This makes it a fantastic choice for older siblings that want to be seated together. It's slightly larger than other models, but it feels light and has a comfortable suspension for the kerbs.
There are also plenty of 3-wheeler inline tandems that are available such as Phil and Teds inline models or iCandy's Peach and Pear buggies, for instance they offer stability and swift steering. They can be folded into a single buggy if you have limited space at home or need to carry it from the car to the bus station.
Be aware that a two-wheeled buggy is more heavy and more bulkier than one that is compact. Make sure you know what you want prior to making a buy. It will be utilized on buses, trains, and subways frequently so it must be easy to manage and use. You might need to manage the car seat when taking your child to school or the nursery.
From birth, you're a suitable candidate
There will be a need for a pushchair for the whole family, whether you're expecting twins, or you have another child after you've had your first.
double pram and pushchair buggies tend to be slightly heavier, bulkier and more expensive than single strollers, but they are also more maneuverable through narrower doors or around obstacles like curbs. Many double buggies can be used with piggyback boards (available from the manufacturer or as an accessory). This allows you to transport three children simultaneously.
Tandem
pushchairs double place one child in front of the other. They're a good option for children who are similar in age and are able to get along. They're not foolproof. Siblings sitting side-by-side can kick or punch each other, and children of different heights could argue over who sits taller. This issue can be resolved by a tandem high-low model that raises the seat to the rear. Your older child isn't seated at the bottom of the car and won't have much of an opportunity to see.
The iCandy Wave is a great alternative for parents who want an easy-to-use convertible double buggy that can fit both a newborn in a carrycot, and an older child in the main seat. It has a clever frame which can be expanded in size when you add a second child seat. It can also fold flat for storage that is compact. The cushioned seats are comfortable, the straps are simple to fasten and the buckles some of the most comfortable we've seen on any of our tests. The canopies have a generous size and UPF 50+ protection, and the window is peekaboo. Both seats are reclined independently.
The only drawback to the iCandy tandem is that it's quite expensive. But a high-quality tandem will last you for years and retain the highest resale value, which means that in the end, you'll likely recoup a portion of the cost. The iCandy does not have the same seating arrangements as our other top picks. It's nevertheless a good option for families who don't want to spend lots of money.
