In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds that love to play, climb and interact. They require at least 2 to 3 hours a day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but is also a great pet for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which could be a problem in condos and apartments or near young children who might be scared by their roar.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic meaning males and females are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only way to determine sex. Once the birds' sex is known the breeding process can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. It is not an easy process, and it is essential that the pet's owner is patient and understands that this is not an undertaking to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
For decades, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the ocean.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could live for the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean, not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and connect with their family members until death. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
A balanced diet is vital for the health of a gold and blue macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. A well-fed macaw in captivity can live for up to 60 years old. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of space to fly around and exercise.
A golden and blue macaw is a lovely companion, but also smart. They are known to quickly learn new words and tricks, and they are highly adaptable. This bird is perfect for those just beginning their journey into avian companionship.
This bird is also very social and can easily bond with her family members. Blue and gold macaws often have loud vocalizations that include "flock calls," which is part of their normal behavior. They may even squabble and chew occasionally, particularly when they are angry or bored. It is crucial for potential pet owners to be aware that this type of behavior is normal and must be expected.
The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita's health, and her status but there are still questions. Certain experts, like Akromas who was the one who trained or was in charge of the care of Lolita at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats more than 115 pounds of salmon capelin, herring and squid every day.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that many claim is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is gorgeous, but her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see that she is released back into the wild. Lolita, who has lived at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 was a popular tourist attraction for a long time. She has battled chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. They have shown that she is aging quickly and her health is declining.
It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor is not obliged to disclose the information. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea and she will be able to swim deep in the water and possibly even be being reunited with her mother orca. These plans came too late to save the whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
