Be sure to examine the brushes of your robot for hair that is tangled and large debris and clean them as needed. Some models also self-empty their onboard dust bin into a larger bin in the base, which reduces the amount of fine dust that is released into the air.

1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the pricier Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've tested. They feature motors that are top of the quality and can suction up to 5,500 Pascals. Like other iRobots with premium features (including the most powerful model) they employ intelligent mapping to design precise floor plans and eliminate household obstacles like furniture legs. The robots also come with the feature of Carpet Boost that boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of a room.

Still, it's very good, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used while you are at work or at school. The only thing it doesn't have that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle, however. If you want to change the mopping pad to dry ones in a matter of minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that can sweep floors. Its smart cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean, and effective in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also features a self-emptying dustbin with powerful suction and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, though it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensors to keep away from obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time to provide more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. It has a battery lifespan that is similar to other models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can tell it to pull back and extend its mop. This will help prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also great for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. It's not as effective on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could clean an entire home with just 66 percent of its battery remaining. It did a good cleaning job on different rooms and floors with various flooring types including certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was top-notch, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds, shoes and cables.

It's more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature that we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competition's boxy units this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also its smartest. It features advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's also the only robot vacuum or mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors, including a structured lighting system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot vacuum best we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It comes with an intuitive mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a concern in the mornings before work, or in the evening when you are trying to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and some extra cost, this is a very powerful two-in-one that will delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that let you forget about your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its premium competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection but this was not reliable in our tests and was occasionally confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner comes with the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with a feature called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas in the home based on how dirty those areas are.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose models that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your house using the app or voice controls. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. Finally the recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to take over exactly where it left off is great for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would expect from its price tag. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion, which cleans better than most of the other mop cleaners for robots we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The iRobot app is designed to help you navigate an exercise in mapping, which gathers information on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to create the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to rank your most filthy areas for better performance. The app has a range of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It has a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction and clever combs for removing pet hair. It also has the ability to set up a spot clean that intensely cleans a localized area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It's good at vacuuming, but it is more susceptible to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit noisier than the other top robot vacuums we've tried. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that doesn't double as an emptying bin.
