Lolita’s Personality

They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance to those living nearby. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their roar.

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only method to determine sex. Once sex has been determined pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. It is a lengthy process and the pet's owner must be patient and recognize that this is a difficult task. Lolita's Care

For decades activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to sea.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, promised to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself not a concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that bond with their families until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. They include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to living a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can go swimming in the deep sea and perhaps be being reunited with her mother orca.
