This is more frequent for older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are not deep enough or the wrong size for the latch, or because of damage or a broken strike plate. If this is the case, follow the same procedure for adjusting the strike plate, using an iron file instead of a chisel and hammer.
Removal of the Latch
The latch is a bent metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward and allows you to open the door. If you're not changing the locks, the new latch should fit in your existing recess and will be compatible with your current keys. Removing the Cover Plate
