Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.

Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a certain amount.

Item Level

When an item gets upgraded, its base stats are increased in value. This is the sum of all of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades to items can be costly dependent on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to perform. This is due to the sheer number of perks that have to be changed in order to upgrade an item.

Item level is a popular measure of power, and can be found on all item tooltips. It can also be used as a gating requirement while waiting to queue for dungeons and raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at the lower levels). The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell gear players can look at the level of an item. It's a sign of the item's damage and its quality. Comparing items from the inventory of a vendor can be done using the level of the item.

The level of the item can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the item's full description, including ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are a few theories about how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different values and that gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. This can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl, which is usually close to the actual Blizzard item upgrader kit level.

However, this is not the only factor that affects an item's ilvl, because the level of the area the item dropped in can alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding a level to its haste or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.

Item Stats

The item's stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game uses a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the Best item upgrader." The stats of a base weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods which are then increased by the player's skill.

The upgrades to items add by increasing certain stats of the item. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the Best item upgrader. A grey or white item for instance, will only be upgraded one time and items that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at higher costs.

Affixes can also be used to alter the stats of an item. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The affixes could provide the item additional damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing cooldowns), or make the item unique by putting an exclusive name to the item.

At present, all affixes can be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using the arrows that circle. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold as well as items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same way as other rerolling options.

Players can upgrade an item to a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The possible stat ranges of an item are determined by the item level, but all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it is a unique item or a God roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could change is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. But as with base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the probability of obtaining items and the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. It does not, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade gear earlier in the game. This is particularly useful in early game runs because players tend to put weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance that increases with each item level and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned with the Luck property, with a default value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on their material type) for a further +40 luck, or to increase the Luck of an item up to 140.

Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any skill that is able to deal damage by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade or to stop players from losing their items if it fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limits to the extent to which success rates can be increased, and the overall chance of a failed upgrade cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an upgrades is also influenced by the Luck of that item. All items have an average success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases this chance by 5%.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be obscured by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
